UK Government finally takes a major step forward by adapting to Open Source.
Back in my corporate days at Sun Microsystems/Oracle one of my favourite projects was the testing and unveiling of open office software and platforms across the country. We challenged Microsoft who were costing corporates and the government a lot of money and constantly needed physical upgrades and maintenance. Our linux based open software was one of the first of it’s time, rivalling Office Suite we had all the core features from word processing, spreadsheet and presentation programs to e-mails, drawing programs and formula generators.
As a forefront visionary I knew that this was an essential next step in our technological way of thinking. Here are some articles dated 12 years back, that have quoted me, on introducing open source desktops to the market and trying to convince the major ISP’s that this was the future. Even though ISP’s were on board eventually, such as Sony, it did not take off as much – due to the technology being ahead of it’s time.

I felt good yesterday as I read this article in the Guardian regarding the UK Government’s plan to finally make the switch to open office. Innovation and Adapting to the current environment are two essentials for all types of businesses and services. Innovation in a broader manner, means doing things differently. You can implement newer ideas, create better products or design effective processes for the success of your business. You can think out of the box to help your business adapt to the changing marketplace dynamics. Innovation is discovering new ways of creating value and to stimulate growth, prosperity and survival of the organization. Successful innovation should be the soul of your organization – part of its culture, vision, strategy and environment.
